The GenAI project's school collaboration launched on Friday, February 3, 2023 from 9-14 at a joint planning meeting in Joensuu. The event included 7 primary schools, 3 lower secondary schools, and 2 comprehensive schools from the Joensuu area.

During the workshop, GenAI project director Professor Matti Tedre introduced the basic concepts of artificial intelligence and machine learning, as well as the transformation in data-driven thinking. After the lecture, participants had the opportunity to practically test various cutting-edge technologies with the support of computer scientists.

Since school interventions are planned through collaboration between teachers and researchers, the day also included outlining the project's implementation and the spring 2023 schedule.

School collaboration is coordinated by Joensuu Media Center, which both supports the city's schools in various technology-related matters and organizes and coordinates collaborative projects between the University of Eastern Finland and schools. According to Mari Levy, representative of the Media Center, the upcoming six-year joint journey will be amazing!

Today, 7 brave primary schools, 3 courageous lower secondary schools, and 2 enterprising comprehensive schools from Joensuu started together with the Media Center an unprecedented research journey into the world of machine learning and artificial intelligence. Huge thanks to you for choosing us as your travel companions – to UEF's Professor Matti Tedre, Henriikka Vartiainen, and Juho Kahila, whose GenerationAI project will allow us to learn to understand the phenomena of our time together with the children of the AI generation over the next six years! I can't wait for the next step!
